Frequently asked questions

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous support to a birthing person before, during, and shortly after childbirth. We do not replace medical providers—we work alongside them to support your choices, reduce anxiety, and create space for informed decision-making.

Are doulas for partners too?

Yes! Doulas help partners feel grounded and supported to reassure them that they are doing great with supporting their loved one. Doulas can help guide the partner to techniques to reduce the birthing person’s pain with increasing emotional connection between them. Doulas can allow and encourage the partner to rest without guilt, in order to be prepared to take care of the birthing person when they need it the most. Doulas can assist in enhancing the energy between the birthing person and the partner to only create a more enjoyable, connected birth experience. Lastly, doulas can answer questions, assist in educating and explaining the birthing process, options for pain relief, procedural inquiries and developmental progression of the infant.

Can’t my partner be my support person?

Partners are extremely essential to the birthing process. They are however, emotionally invested (as they should be), which can make staying a calm, neutral presence difficult. The doula helps to hold space for the birthing person without emotional triggers of seeing a loved one in a vulnerable, often painful situation. Partners may feel exhausted during this time and be unsure of how to best support the birthing person. Doulas can help guide the partner in techniques utilized for pain relief, labor progression, and information to help them make the most informed decisions. Your partner knows you best and is your biggest cheerleader. Having a doula that can see the whole picture can allow your partner to stay focused on you as they know you best.

Why should I hire a doula?

People who use doulas are less likely to need medical interventions (like C-sections or epidurals).

  1. Doula-supported births are often shorter, with less need for pain relief.

  2. Birthing people with doulas report higher satisfaction with their birth experience.

  3. Continuous support in labor—like what a doula provides—has been linked to better outcomes for both parents and babies.
